Beautiful, young geisha Cio-Cio San has renounced her family and surrendered herself body and soul to the handsome naval officer B.F. Pinkerton. He pledges his love and marries her. Though the American consul, Sharpless, reminds Pinkerton of her delicate nature and true heart he nevertheless abandons her and returns to America. She waits faithfully for his return only to realize his ultimate betrayal when Pinkerton's American wife arrives asking for Butterfly's beloved illegitimate child. She is forced to make the ultimate choice between life and honor. This heartbreaking drama explores the clash of cultures and innocence destroyed in one of Puccini's most deeply felt and imaginative operas. The lush score swells with unabashed melodies and the story touches the depths of the human soul.
